Workshop Title: Portraits and Figures in Oils: Mastering Verismo Impressionism

Outline:

  1. Introduction (15 minutes) A. Welcome and brief overview of the workshop B. Introduction to Jerry Ross’ signature style of “verismo” or loose brush impressionism C. Explanation of the workshop’s goals and objectives
  2. Understanding the Basics (30 minutes) A. Materials and tools needed for oil painting B. Introduction to the concept of notan and its importance in simplifying form C. Demonstration and practice session on creating a notan value study D. Discussion on the importance of structure and composition in portraiture and figuration

III. Portraiture Techniques (60 minutes) A. Sketch mode of artistic production: Importance and benefits B. Step-by-step demonstration of portrait sketching, focusing on capturing likeness and expression C. Practical exercises for participants to practice sketching portraits D. Individual guidance and feedback from the instructor

  2. Figuration in Interior Spaces (60 minutes) A. Introduction to incorporating figures into interior spaces B. Demonstration of techniques for creating depth, perspective, and atmosphere in interior settings C. Discussion on the use of calligraphic brushwork and gesture drawing to convey movement and energy D. Practical exercises for participants to create their own interior space with figures
  3. Applying Verismo Impressionism (30 minutes) A. Exploring loose brushwork techniques and creating a sense of spontaneity B. Demonstration of verismo impressionism in rendering portraits and figures C. Tips and tricks for achieving a lively and expressive painting style D. Participants practice incorporating verismo impressionism into their own artwork
